Aiming for candour

Glowing light bulbs with words like "coaching," "success," and "motivation" inside, set against a black background.

To get to the core issues and challenges of any business, you must be able to communicate effectively – when things are going well, and not so well.

But does that mean being honest – or does that mean being kind?

It means - of course – both. But that’s impossible without trust.

No relationship can prosper, if honesty comes without kindness – and no relationship can thrive, if kindness comes without honesty. If you can get to know each other, while committing to these principles, you’re in with a shout.

Always remember though, it’s a journey – trust is gained and built on layer-by-layer. To get past core challenges, there must be robust conversation.

Where there’s trust, healthy professional conflict solves problems and builds resilience. But do keep the maintenance of that trust your priority. With the great team environment you’ve nurtured, solutions will come - but forcing the issue and offending people, can have far-reaching consequences. It’s easier and more enjoyable to keep people happy than it is to restore their trust when they feel rejected, demoralised, or unsafe.

Always aim for candour: being honest, sincere, and kind. This makes feedback more targeted, less personal, and more effective.

To grow - together - we need to be challenged in a safe, trusting environment.

And remember, life’s good.
