is kindness a weakness?

Have you ever had someone take your kindness and generosity for granted? Perhaps they were happy to accept your help, only to turn around and dismiss it with a hurtful remark when they no longer needed you. It's a gut-wrenching experience that leaves you questioning why you bother to help at all, and it can be easy to beat yourself up over it.

Let’s pause for a moment here. Is kindness a weakness or barrier to being an effective father, sister, daughter or leader?

Absolutely not.

Brené Brown, a renowned researcher, and storyteller, reminds us, "Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind." This powerful quote highlights the importance of being straightforward and honest, which are essential aspects of true kindness.

In my experience, the most common traits I see in the workforce today are a desire to be liked and appreciated. Many of us are driven by empathy, compassion, and self-sacrifice. Yet, we often struggle to ask for help, avoid difficult conversations or connect with our authentic selves when needed. This can lead to repeating the same choices and experiencing similar, often disappointing, outcomes.

I know this feeling well :(

As social beings, humans are emotional and unpredictable. We frequently make irrational choices driven by fear—fear of failure, rejection, or the unknown. These fears are natural and affect us daily.

One question I hear often is: Can you still be an effective leader if you are kind?

The answer is a resounding yes. Kindness, when balanced with accountability and the courage to have difficult conversations, can make you an outstanding leader. It's about being fair yet firm, and ensuring your actions align with the best interests of the team and the business and these can be developed with repetition, reflection, and refinement.

Remember, kindness is not a weakness; it's a strength that, when combined with clarity and honesty, fosters trust and respect. So, let’s embrace our kind hearts while standing firm in our convictions.

Together, we can create a supportive and effective workplace where everyone thrives.
