Having just witnessed the FIGHT MND Big Freeze 8 here in Melbourne, I was blown away by the $19.8 million dollars raised, add to that more than $63 million since 2014 – all committed to MND research and helping those living with MND. Truly extraordinary.
So how do they do it?
A critical element is having a compelling vision. A key lesson for us all.
I’ve had a front-row seat to the juggernaut, through my association with the co-founder & patron Neale Daniher, my former Melbourne Football Club coach – and I’m not surprised by what he and his team have achieved. The secret to Neale’s success as a leader is the clarity he brings to any venture – rallying troops to a better future, that they all feel invested in.
The process:
Set a challenging yet achievable goal
Deliver a message that excites and energises
Make sure the message registers emotionally
And what it all boils down to, is storytelling. As a coach, Neale was a brilliant storyteller, energising us through vivid, inspiring messages - from stories about confidence, and what it took for him to ‘move to the back of the bus,’ to strategic tales of crossing rivers like wildebeest – not zebras – to avoid those hungry crocs!
So, if you ever feel your team are a little flat, or just going through the motions: refine your vision, and then deliver it to them, in a memorable and engaging way. A compelling vision acts as a catalyst for team spirit – nail it, share it, and see what happens.
Below is a one-min snippet from the great man himself, that I filmed some time ago. We discuss the essential need for clarity for all leaders.
And remember…life’s good.
